February 28, 2008 -- There's some pretty amazing off-screen drama going on with the comedy Scrubs, as news breaks that the series could be returning for an 8th season, while at the same time moving to ABC. The current seventh season of Scrubs was announced last year as the final one, but then came the writers' strike, which caused the show to suspend production with six episodes still left to film out of an intended 18.NBC had not committed to go forward with airing these still-unproduced episodes, but meanwhile Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence said he was sure that no matter what, the final episodes would be made by ABC Studios, who produce the show. Whether these episodes would then air on NBC, ABC or go straight to DVD was as yet unknown. Now however, The Hollywood Reporter says that ABC might actually air another new full 18 episode season of the show. The Reporter says details of the deal are still being figured out, as it would involve new contracts for all the writers and actors, since none of them were contracted beyond Season 7. Helping this all happen is the fact ABC president of entertainment Steve McPherson had a hand in developing Scrubs when he was at the studio side of the company. When NBC nearly didn't renew Scrubs for Season 7, McPherson was ready to move the show to his network. TV Guide's Michael Ausiello has spoken to an insider, who says that the plan would be for the show to go back into production very soon and be ready to air this fall on ABC. Also, star Zach Braff, who at one point was uncertain to commit to Season 7, is said to be onboard for an eighth season according to Ausiello's source. Meanwhile, confusing matters more, NBC will still be airing the final five episodes produced from pre-strike scripts – expect Season 7 to remain a truncated 12 episodes should the ABC deal go through -- beginning April 10th, and Ausiello wonders if NBC might advertise them still as the final episodes in order to hurt ABC. There's apparently plenty of bitterness developing between the two networks in the midst of all this, and the Reporter says NBC knew nothing of the plan to move Scrubs to ABC until their initial story broke.
March 26, 2008 -- Scrubs star Aloma Wright (Nurse Laverne/Shirley) tells EW the NBC comedy will jump to ABC for season 8. “As far as I know, it’s set,” she says. (Without a deal in place, NBC and ABC wouldn’t comment.) “After he killed me off, producer [Bill Lawrence] promised me that if they got picked up for a seventh season he’d bring me back as my twin sister. I’m assuming he’ll continue to do the same.”
I originally heard this from Gene but it also sounds like it is coming from Zach's lips too. "It's the final episode on NBC". Hmmm.
Can it be true?? I would love to see them come back, even on ABC, but I hope it's better than the finale on NBC. I did not like that one. Come on ZACH! Come back!!
